Aquila’s new production will use a specially commissioned translation by Peter Meineck (winner of the American Translators Association Award for translation), original music and choreography and will be performed in masks, utilizing the masked acting techniques also developed by Aquila’s artistic director Peter Meineck. This exciting new research on the use of the Greek tragic mask takes into full consideration the original performance conditions from the perspective of the spectator and the relationship of the mask to the surrounding environment. Meineck’s work on masks soon to be published in Arion: A Journal for the Classics and the Humanities seeks to revolutionize the ways in which masks are utilized and perceived on stage and his research involves new studies from the fields of neuroscience and cognitive studies.
